The Light Cavalry Stables

Based at Flemish Farm in Windsor Great Park, The Light Cavalry stables are a jewel in the Honourable Artillery Company’s crown. Glorious facilities, covered school, access to the Great Park, there could not be a finer place to ride in the United Kingdom.

The Light Cavalry is a non-profit charity organisation, the stables are self-funded and we welcome civilian Supporting Riders who can independently walk trot and canter. For an annual subscription our Supporting Riders ride the Light Cavalry horses, have lessons, hack in Windsor Great Park, enter our shows, attend social events, clinics, military riding sessions, receive discount at a local tack shop and help behind the scenes at parades. There is fee to be a Supporting Rider of the Light Cavalry. If this sounds like something you would like to get involved with please contact us at Stables.LC@hac.org.uk, we would love to hear from you.

Military Riding

We draw on current and former members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment to instruct in all forms of military riding. We focus on The Light Cavalry drill movements of the 1860s and are the only unit to perform a ‘canter past whilst paying compliments’ as part of our Annual Inspection. We hold Troop rides every Thursday evening to achieve these standards and also instruct in tent pegging.

Military Welfare

We enable a wide range of military welfare support through the use of our facilities and horses. Equine-assisted coaching courses support those who have experienced severe psychological trauma. Primarily this is with Armed Forces personnel, veterans and emergency services. We only work with highly experienced professionals, but the results are remarkable, and participants’ satisfaction and enjoyment is inspirational.

Cadet Forces

Training the Next Generation. The Light Cavalry is proud to have trained many cadets (CCF, ACF and RAF Cadets) in the military equitation. We support cadets and school CCF organisations, which have included Eton, Harrow and Wellington. We offer a basic cavalry training course, and more advanced riders can learn skill at arms and musical rides. We also run an annual Military Equitation Competition for cadets.

Lessons

For Supporting Riders private lessons are a great way to focus on a particular technique or develop a new skill set, they allow a rider to be focused and set their own goals often progressing quickly. Group lessons are available at various times during the weekday evenings and weekends and are split into two different levels- Novice/ Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced. There are never more than 5 riders in our group lessons. This is also a great way to meet other Supporting Riders. Semi-Private lessons can be arranged for you and a friend or another Supporting Rider you have met working towards the same goals. We also offer and array of activities, show days and camp days throughout the year so there is always something fun to get involved in- Our Coaches are all enthusiastic and engaging with many holding higher level BHS qualifications.

Hacking

More than a walk in the Park! We run Group Escorted Hacks (3 riders and 1 escort) in perhaps the finest riding countryside in the United Kingdom. We will take care to assess you and your horse, teach you all the Windsor Great Park rules and ensure that everyone is safe when out The Light Cavalry Stables. Our horses are forwarded going, more so in the winter so this would suit the more confident riders. Because we regularly pay compliments to member of the Royal Family, we insist that all riders are correctly dressed and smartly turned out.
